The Regulatory and Code Alignment

Abu Dhabi sits amidst a unique opportunity. At no point in recent history, has a rapidly developing, well resourced City or sovereign nation, been able to draft both Development Regulations, Building Codes and Sustainability Standards concurrently. Instead, cities that have adopted progressive stances toward sustainable development have typically added sustainability policies and initiatives on top of long entrenched codes and regulations. This has led to confusing standards, inefficient reviews and only a limited penetration of practice.

Abu Dhabi, on the other hand, has a unique opportunity to draft all of its codes and regulations in a manner that will synchronize and align sustainable development practices throughout all major codes. These include Abu Dhabi’s Framework Development Regulations (FDR) and the Abu Dhabi Municipality Building Code. UPC and its consultant team is working closely with other teams responsible for these documents to assure that sustainable development practices are deeply embedded at all levels of the design review and approval process.
